It’s all joy for the parents of conjoined twins who got separated by doctors, ensuring that they can now have their separate lives.

After a successful four-hour operation at a German hospital, twin girls who were born conjoined at the abdomen are now content with their new lives.

The unidentified Siamese twins were delivered via C-section in August 2023, and seven weeks later, they had surgery to separate them.

Physicians from the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf carried out the procedure, which the hospital described as the first in its 135-year existence.

“In this case, the children were medically ideal because they each had all of their vital organs,” Dr. Kurt Hecher, the hospital’s director of prenatal medicine, said in a statement obtained by Newsflash.

The girls were unique because, according to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, 75% of conjoined twins exchange organs with one another.

In the twelfth week of pregnancy, the twins’ parents learned that the young girls were joined at the abdomen.

At 33 weeks, doctors made the difficult medical decision to undergo a C-section, which had a high chance of complications.

“It was a particular challenge because, with a normal twin birth, only one child at a time has to fit through the opening of the uterus as they are brought into the world one after the other,” Hecher explained. “In this case, there were two children at the same time.”

Though they suffered in the weeks following their early delivery, the little girls were well taken care of by a group of astute medical experts.

“Our medical and nursing team quickly adapted to caring for the children in a ‘double pack,’” Dr. Dominique Singer, the hospital’s head of neonatology and pediatric intensive care, declared.

“Even when the two of them went through a somewhat more difficult phase before the operation, we always had the impression that they stabilized each other,” she added.

Separation of Conjoined Twins Began on October 6

The twins had the separation procedure on October 6 of last year, with medical professionals attempting to seal each of their stomachs.

After that month, the treatment was deemed successful, and the girls were allowed to return home with their parents.

After more than three months, the twins are growing healthily, and their happy parents are encouraging other parents to hold onto hope in case their infants are born with any defects.

“We are deeply grateful for the care, provision, and separation of our girls,” they said in a statement.

“We would like to encourage other parents. So much is now possible in medicine.”
